Use the Amsterdam subway system, a bike or a boat to get around in the Dutch capital

When going to a new city, many people are tempted to take the car so they can easily travel from one part of the city to another. Our advice is: don’t. For it is rather frustrating to travel through Amsterdam by car. Besides, the parking rates are high. A parking spot in the centre can easily cost you five euro per hour. There are more effective and cheaper ways to travel through Amsterdam.

Public Transport in Amsterdam

The public transport in Amsterdam is fast, efficient and cheap. You can always find a bus that will take you to the location you wish. You can catch a tram every 10 minutes, so you don’t have to worry you’ll be excessively late if you missed one. The same thing goes for the subway in Amsterdam. Every ten to fifteen minutes a metro passes. If you wish to take the bus, tram or metro, you should get a GVB card. With this card you can aboard on all the public transport. If you wish to know more about this public transport card you can read the article Amsterdam public transport tickets: easy, fast and cheap!

Amsterdam is a maritime city and has beautiful canals that are registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is therefore possible to sight see the city by boat. You can travel with the recreational boat and lay back while enjoying the beautiful sights, but you can also rent a boat in Amsterdam and navigate yourself! It might not the cheapest way to get around, but it sure is one of the best!

Rent a bike

The bike is the second best way of transportation in The Netherlands. Whenever Dutch people wish to get to a place near their house, they grab their bike. It is a fun, healthy, cheap and fast way to get around. It is also handy, for with a bike you can ride through ally’s that are forbidden for cars. There are several bike rental companies in the centre of Amsterdam, for example Rent A Bike, Orange and Yellow Bike.

Of course you can also get to know the city by foot. Walking is one of the best options you have when you wish to see the top attractions that are located in the city centre. You don’t have to walk very far to visit the next, since many of the historical buildings are located close to one another.
